I gave photography workshops to the young people of Marowijne, as a continuation of the workshops I had given as part of my project Double Heritage. In collaboration with other artists, I also gave workshops in drawing, painting, and collage, to the children of Moengo and the surrounding area, during which they were challenged to think about how they see themselves and each other in relation to the environment in which they were growing up. What do the abandoned places mean to them? Have they become superfluous? Do they remind them of better times, or are they relics of colonialism and segregation? The conversations I had with the children and youngsters gave me ideas for the photo series Bending Benchmarks.
