redenen genoeg
om ons kafee manloos te houden.
Iedere keer
als we heelhuids
thuisgekomen zijn,
zijn we blij.
Blij zijn?
Soms ga ik expres te voet,
met bonzend hart
dit lijf is van mij.
Een regenpak dragen,
op een herenfiets rijden,
omrijden,
sleutelbos alvast
tussen je vingers
onveilig
op straat of thuis,
bewust of onbewust
nagefloten, nageroepen, nagesist, toegegrijnsd,
dat heb je
als de bladeren gaan vallen
dit lijf is van mij.
Dat we ons schuldig voelen
als ons toch iets overkomt
ondanks alle maatregelen
omdat het een angst is
om te overwinnen,
maar niet alleen
dit lijf
is van mij.
reasons enough
to keep our café man-free.
Every time
we have come home
in one piece,
we are glad.
Glad?
Sometimes I walk on purpose,
with a pounding heart
this body is mine.
Wearing a rain suit,
riding a men’s bike,
taking the long way round,
keys already
between your fingers
unsafe
on the street or at home,
consciously or unconsciously
whistled at, called after, hissed at, leered at,
that’s what you get
when the leaves start to fall
this body is mine.
That we feel guilty
when something happens to us anyway
despite all precautions
because it is a fear
to overcome,
but not alone
this body
is mine.
I opened the lecture with a poem. Every line comes from the archives: from the Vrouwenkrant Tilburg, from ROSA, the women’s newspaper of Den Bosch, and from the Vrouwenradio Den Bosch. The poem is shown here in the Dutch original and in English translation.
