Churning butter

In March 2024, Ineke and I were in Bathmen, the place where Ineke grew up. There, we learned how to make butter and how to make friends with a horse. This was preparatory work for our exhibition “1en1is1” at Arti et Amicitiae in May 2024.
On June 17th, we held a performance at Arti et Amicitiae where we made butter together with the audience.
Before the performance, we had a joint conversation, in which Fleur Ouwerkerk and Anja Masling also participated. We discussed what led us to create work about our grandmothers
Ineke churns the butter just as her grandmother used to and explains how it works at each step
People were given a small glass jar with buttermilk. By shaking it long and hard, the milk turned into butter. Ineke then strained it briefly, making the butter ready to eat
After people had churned their own butter, they could have a sandwich spread by me. But only if they shared a story about their grandmother in return
